Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on soft tissue technique, which involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions. Myofascial release techniques decrease scar tissue, swelling and pain, plus it increases blood and lymph flow and restores motion in the muscles and connective tissues. It also can be helpful in reducing the swelling and pooling of fluids at the site of a recent injury or trauma. This sustained pressure “time element” has to do with the viscous flow and the piezoelectric phenomenon: a low load (gentle pressure) applied slowly will allow a viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate (relax).
Trauma, inflammatory responses, and surgical procedures create myofascial restrictions (trigger point like areas), which can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures. These restrictions do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CT scans, electromyography, etc.).
Myofascial release is especially helpful for patients, who have lost flexibility or function following an injury or if experiencing ongoing back, shoulder, hip, or virtually pain in any area containing soft tissue.
