Intersegmental traction is an effective chiropractic therapy, which induces passive motion into each segment of the spine for the purpose of stretching the spinal joints and increasing the mobility of each segment.
Intersegmental traction helps to gently and effectively restore necessary elasticity and reestablish normal range of motion to each vertebrae in your spine. It also facilitates muscle relaxation to significantly reduce muscle spasms.
After the age of 18 to 25 years, the spinal discs have a poor blood supply. They get their nutrients from the circulation of fluids, which surround the discs. Fixations of the vertebra prevent the natural circulation of fluids though the disc and can lead to disc thinning from degeneration.
At Dunn Chiropractic & Rehab, intersegmental traction is delivered through the use of a specialized table, which has rotating rollers, just beneath the surface of the table. You lay on your back on the table. The rollers are adjusted, depending on the type of your chiropractic condition and your weight, to gently and specifically elongate, stretch and mobilize your spinal joints and muscles. This helps reduce muscle spasms and increases your range of motion in each of your spinal segments (vertebrae).
When your muscles begin to relax and the vertebra return to normal movement (each vertebrae moving independently from the other vertebrae; like the links in a chain), the discs will be repeatedly squeezed and released, which will increase the exchange of fluids to the disc (like repeatedly squeezing and releasing a sponge). This exchange in fluids will supply oxygen and nutrients to the discs and the surrounding soft tissues. This sponging of the disc helps make the disc healthier and helps to slow and prevent the degeneration of the disc from the abnormal wear and tear of the vertebral fixations in the spine. Plus, a healthy flexible spine is less likely to experience exacerbations and future injuries.
Intersegmental traction is non-invasive and painless. Patients find this type of therapy very relaxing. The gentle rolling action is restful and exercises the spine without effort. During a treatment session, the intersegmental traction interacts with your body in a massage-like fashion.
The benefits of Intersegmental Traction are:
- Reduces muscle spasms and spinal fixations / hypomobile segments
- Increases the exchange of fluids, oxygen and nutrients to discs, ligaments and muscles
- Increases mobility of each segment of the spine
- Increases flexibility of each spinal region
- Improves balance and mobility (flexibility) of the entire spine
Intersegmental traction is a very effective chiropractic therapy, when used in conjunction with chiropractic manipulation and other modalities.
